CHIMEHUIN RIVER REPORT
(April 23/24, 2005)
Two-day floating outing on the Chimehuin River, from the Angostura del
Manzano spot to the
"Balsa
Vieja"
on the Collón Curá River (approximately 35 km. of river).
The
weather: cold and windy during both days.
Equipment: #6 and #7 rods, Depth Charge 200 and Tenny 200 sinking lines.
The
best performing flies were olive and black Big Sack, brown, olive and
black rubber legged Wolly Bugger, grizzly and black Matukas. Also, some
black Zonker performed well. The best performing flies sizes were #4 and
#6.
At
this time of the year and foreseeing the possible movement of migratory
brown trout getting ready for spawning, it is not convenient to decrease
the size of the flies and the thickness of the tippets too much (1X and
2X being the most appropriate).
Unfortunately, the strong Eastern wind (puelche), which blew all
day on Saturday and almost the entire Sunday, complicated the attempts
to fish with dry flies, even if the river volume was excellent for
floating lines and more subtle equipments, which allowed us to take
advantage of the important small mayfly hatching taking place towards
midday.
Fishing was not too abundant, probably as a result of the changes in
pressure during both days; in fact, on Saturday, the cold weather began
with no wind and, as from 11am, a strong puelche wind began to
blow and remained during the rest of the day. On Sunday, the same
happened, with calm intervals.
The
Collón Curá offered good rainbow trout though not plenty of them.
On
the other hand, we have not been able to find migratory brown trout,
which made us think that breeding has not began yet, most probably due
to the scarce rainfall which failed to increase the rivers volume.
