Floating the Collón
Curá from the La Rinconada bridge (National Route 234) up to the
Balsa Vieja stop (National Route 40), traveling approximately 15
km. of the river.
Sunny, but cold and windy weather.
Equipment ussed: rods
for #5 and #6 lines, Depth Charge 200 sinking lines.
The most effective fly, with a great advantage over the rest of
the flies used, was a grizzly Matuka Muddler, tied in a Mustad
9672 n° 4 hook, black chenille ice body, with a small red feather
or floss tail and a couple of red wool or chenille turns as a
throat. The muddler head trimmed small with the collar totally cut
in its lowest part; it is convenient to weight it with a lead wire
so that it sinks a bit and works as soon as it falls into the
water. Slowly recovered and with a controlled drift, it performed
very well.
The strong wind
prevented us from using lighter equipment and floating lines,
although in the most sheltered areas of the river and the still
waters behind the willows, activity was noticed on the surface as
small mayflies were taken.
There
were abundant strikes and good average size, with fat fighting
rainbow and more than interesting brown trout. Even if some trout
movement was noticed, it was done by the resident trout, although
at the time in which this report was written (05/07), it has began
to rain and it has been forecast that the weather conditions
remain the same for several days, which will probably raise the
level of the rivers and the migratory brown trout will certainly
begin to move.
